What's So Amazing About Ecuador

  • Ecuador: is home to an astounding array of wonders that include picturesque colonial towns, rich culture, the Amazonia rainforest, the spectacular snow-capped volcanoes of the Andes, and the Galapagos Islands.
  • Ecuator: The country is named for the equator, which crosses through it, with sites allowing you to straddle both hemispheres.
  • Quito: the capital of Ecuador, is the highest capital in the world and was awarded the first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Rights of Nature: In 2008, Ecuador became the first country to grant constitutional rights to nature itself.
  • Weather: there is no winter or summer, merely a dry season and a wet season, with weather patterns coming from both the Pacific and the Amazon.
  • Diverse Ecosystems: a small country that contains four distinct regions: the Andes, which feature numerous volcanoes including the Chimborazo volcano (Earth’s closest point to the sun), the Oriente to the east with the Amazon jungle, the Pacific coast and the Galapagos.
  • Galápagos Islands: A world-renowned archipelago known for its unique wildlife that inspired Darwin’s
  • Biodiversity: Despite its small size, Ecuador is considered a megadiverse country with the highest concentration of biodiversity per square kilometer on Earth. 10% of the planet’s plant species, 8% of its animal species, and 18% of its bird species.  That equates to 25,000 species of plants (which equates to 10 percent of the worlds plant species live in Ecuador including around 5000 species of orchids alone) 1632 species of birds. 492 species of amphibians.
  • Indigenous Cultures: Ecuador has a rich cultural diversity with fourteen indigenous nationalities that maintain their own languages and traditions.
  • Bird watching: the world’s highest density of bird species found per acre. 1,632 different bird species accounts for almost 15% of the species known to exist in the world. What makes Ecuador really stand out from other destinations is its diverse geography, so you can count on finding diverse bird life wherever you are.
  • Hummingbirds: the world record for the highest number of hummingbird species, with over 132 species, is here in Ecuador.
  • Language: the official language is Spanish, but Quichua, the lingua franca of the Inca Empire, is spoken by many of the indigenous people. Ecuadorians are grateful to travelers who try to speak Spanish.

  • Communication: Wifi and cell phone coverage is nearly universal throughout the country.
  • Fun fact: the Panama hat is actually from Ecuador.
