It was no coincidence that two-time olympic C-1 racer Adam Clawson was at ERA this morning…he was in to join his step-father for a day of paddling with Craig on the Ocoee. Craig’s famous “giggle” was heard as he chortled that he would be “teaching Adam” on the river.
But what was a coincidence is that Adam happened to stop in on the first day of our annual Kids Rule! week. Having himself started paddling at age 8, Adam was the perfect role model to speak at the “opening ceremonies” on day one–the day we call our “mentor day.” On mentor day we bring veteran kids camp participants and new recruits together to paddle so that the new kayakers can be exposed to the experienced kids and feel more comfortable about their “day one Jitters.”
As our guest speaker, Adam talked to the group about how he got into paddling and the route that he took (which eventually led him to two Olympics-Barcelona and Atlanta). He inspired the kids to have fun and enjoy paddling. Inspiring words from an olympic paddler and father of a 7 year old little girl himself.
